6/28 - Santa Anita Full Card

Updated 2:30pm EST.

Race Rating System-

I always give you 5 picks in each race to help you fill out your exotic bets.  In some races I may not use all 5 in my bets.  The A horse is ALWAYS my selected winner.  If no suggested plays are listed then I would not consider betting the race.  See the key below for how I label the races.

Weak - Poor races to invest in.  Usually too wide open.  Winner possible outside of my top 5.
Action - Some clarity in the race, but winner likely in top 4 or 5.
Action+ - Some clarity, but winner likely in top 3.
Play - can usually key top 2 (A & B) horses in exotics.  Good Exacta or Trifecta play.
Prime - Excellent race to key or single in the exotics.

Race 1 - 6-1/2f sMSW TURF - Action
A - #10 Tribalist (3-1) - has posted a good worktab leading into his 1st out in 2014, pedigree says he should handle the turf ok
B - #5 Badasmywifeletsmeb (8-1) - horse has shown a lot of early speed and I'm sure they are removing the blinkers in an effort to even him out a little, class drops from open MSW to state-bred MSW
C - #3 Tribal Dude (4-1) - never crazy about career Md's, but the blinkers come off and he's got some good numbers sprinting on the turf.  good exotics candidate.
D - #2 Bold Fantasy (7/2) - closed really well last time out, another one who takes a some class relief from MSW to state-bred.
E - #4 Table Twentyone (8-1)

Multi-Race Horses: 10,5,3
Suggest Plays:

Race 2 - 6-1/2f Clm - Action
A - #3 This Cat's Awesome (8-1) - takes a nice class drop from open 25K company to 12500N2L, could very well grab the lead in a paceless race and go gate to wire, the price doesn't hurt your feelings either
B - #2 Shining Son (3-1) - has some solid beyers for this group, was close 2 back against this same level, has some decent early speed
C - #8 Clubhouse Rock (10-1) - should be close to the pace and has had some trouble in last few starts
D - #1 Dehere Is Gone (7/2)
E - #5 Hope 'n Pray (4-1)

Multi-Race Horses: 3,2,8
Suggest Plays:

Race 3 - 1mi Md TURF - Action
A - #8 Nero's Promise (6-1) - drops from MSW to MC with a hint of early speed last out
B - #12 Humming Beethoven (9/2) - has shown she can close in her last two starts, just worried she'll get hung wide here
C - #2 Comealongwithme (4-1) - another MSW to MC class dropper
D - #7 Up the Alley (6-1) - no turf experience to look at, but trainer is 29% on 1st claims, adds blinkers and switches to the turf, exotics
E - #4 Kristinite (5-1) - another MSW to MC class dropper

Multi-Race Horses: 8,12,2,7
Suggest Plays:

Race 4 - 6f MSW - Action+
A - #2 Downton My Lady (5-1) - first time starter, but I like the 6/14 workout followed by easier one, trainer is 24% with 1st timers
B - #1 Summerofsixtythree (3-1) - another first timer with a workout pattern that is hard to ignore, look for her to go from the rail as the fast 6/6 work was from the gate
C - #3 Southern Sunshine (4-1) - has run ok, could grab a piece of the exotics
D - #8 Barbs Angel (6-1) - first timer with a good work pattern and trainer, draws Gary Stevens, too much to ignore, exotics
E - #9 Everlovin Woman (12-1) - exotics use, value

Multi-Race Horses:  2,1
Suggest Plays:

$2 - 2,1 / 2,1 = $4
$1 - 2,1 / 3,8,9 = $6

Race 5 - 1mi Royal Heroine G2 TURF - Action+
A - #6 Moone's My Name (9/2) - very consistent closer, will need to prove she can win at this level
B - #9 Kathleen's Rose (6-1) - will be on the front end in a race without much pace, she really likes the Sa turf, dangerous
C - #7 Habibi (6-1) - G1 winner from New Zealand, 1st out this year, should be interesting to see how she runs here
D - #3 Wishing Gate (5-1) - gets back to preferred distance and can close really well, should get a good trip
E - #10 Parranda (3-1) - fits here, but may get hung wide

Multi-Race Horses:  6,9,7
Suggest Plays:

$1 - 6,9 / 6,9 = $2
$1 - 6,9,7 / 6,9,7 = $6
$1 - 6,9 / 7,3,10 = $6

Race 6 - 7f Triple Bend G1 - Play
A - #4 Sahara Sky (8/5) - really likes this Sa course and on his best day should nail these, even with the scratch of Gladding there are still a few speed horses to give him some pace
B - #1 Declassify (5/2) - speed horse who will have his hand forced by the rail post position, will be trying to hold on in the stretch
C - #6 Cyclometer (5/2) - the other speed horse and has proven he can win off a duel
D - #2 Drill (8-1) - can run well at this distance, should mix it up late if he shows up, offers some exotic value
E - #7 Wine Police (9/2)

Multi-Race Horses: 4,1,6
Suggest Plays:

$3 - 4 / 1,6 / 1,6 = $6
$2 - 1,6 / 4 / 1,6 = $4
$1 - 4 / 1,6 / 1,6,2,7 = $6
$1 - 4 / 1,6,2,7 / 1,6 = $6

Race 7 - 1mi Senorita G3 TURF - Action
A - #2 Sheza Smoke Show (6-1) - likes the Sa course, has been improving and closes well
B - #8 Clenor (4-1) - 2nd out in 2014, good closer, look for a big effort on the stretch out
C - #5 Burning Arch (10-1) - offers some exotic value, but is still a Md, last out was on an extremely slow track, always like the presence of Smith
D - #6 Sushi Empire (6-1) - has closed well in the past and Nakatani doesn't hurt in that regard either, should get a good trip, needs a good effort
E - #9 Rovenna (9/2)

Multi-Race Horses: 2,8,5,6
Suggest Plays:

Race 8 - 1-1/4mi Gold Cup G1 - Action+
A - #1 Game On Dude (4/5) - on best day he wins for fun, does have another speed horse to his outside which is a concern, but again on his best day he is capable of a :46 and change 1/2 mile and dispatching of other speed, love the horse, but not sure about him here
B - #6 Majestic Harbor (12-1) - a closer that should get a good trip and offer some value
C - #4 Imperative (4-1) - did post a triple digit beyer at CT last out, another one with a shot if the two speed horses run themselves into the ground
D - #2 Fury Kapcori (9/2) - the other speed horse, hasn't run at this distance, not sure he can hold it agains "the dude"
E - #3 Clubhouse Ride (9/2) - knows what the backend of Game On Dude looks like better than another other horse in this race, exotics

Multi-Race Horses: 1,6,4
Suggest Plays:

$3 - 1 / 6,4 / 6,4 = $6
$1 - 1 / 6,4 / 6,4,2,3 = $6

Race 9 - 1mi OC TURF - Action+

Multi-Race Horses: 8,9,3
Suggest Plays:

$1 - 8,9,3 / 8,9,3 = $6

Race 10 - 6f OC - Action+
A - #1 American Pride (5/2) - definitely took a step fwd in 2014 debut, will need to work out a trip
B - #3 He's Had Enough (6-1) - is a 2013 triple crown trail horse who has posted a few good workouts, needs pace
C - #6 Parliamentarian (8-1)
D - #10 Celebrity Status (6-1)
E - #2 Whine for Wine (8-1)

6/21 - Santa Anita Pick 5 Play & Daily Doubles

Colonial Downs is normally where my focus is this time of year.  However, due to a dispute between the track and horsemen, Colonial is not running a meet this year.  So, I've turned my attention to the last few weeks of the Santa Anita meet.  I did not have time to type up each race, but here is the Pick 5 ticket and Daily Double that I put together.

Pre Scratches.

6/14 - Churchill Downs & Santa Anita Stakes Races

Updated 6:00pm EST.

Churchill Downs - Stakes Races 6-9

Multirace Bets-
Daily Double Races 6,7
$2 - 2 / 4 = $2
$1 - 2 / 4,5,6 = $3
$1 - 2,4,6,5,3 / 4 = $5
$1 = 2,4,6 / 4,5,6 = $9

Daily Double Races 7,8
$1 - 4 / 3,4 = $2
$1 - 4,5,6 / 3,4 = $6
$1 - 4 / 3,4,9,1,6 = $5

Race 6 - 1-1/16mi Matt Winn G3 - Play
A - #2 Tapiture (9/5) - if he runs back to his Southwest and Rebel form, he'll handle these.  He ran decent in the Ky Derby until he hit is distance limitation.  Needs to regain his form, but he's been freshened with a good work pattern and this distance hits him dead between the eyes.  His race to lose.
B - #4 Conquest Titan (10-1) - he needs some pace to run at and it likes favorable for him here.  Looking thru his company lines he's run with some decent horses.  Value on this late closer.
C - #6 The Admiral (8-1) - interesting placement for Baffert, the post should work to his advantage, is taking a step up in class considering the company and stretching out.  Exotics value.
D - #5 Almost Famous (2-1) - likes this course, but seems to be a need the lead type and he figures to get pressure.  Note that last out high Beyer was earned with racing on an uncontested lead, doesn't figure to get that trip here.
E - #3 Rise Up (3-1) - another speed horse, same issue as above that his last out high Beyer was earned on an uncontested lead.

Multi-Race Horses:

A - 2
B - 4,6,5
Suggest Plays:

$2 - 2 / 4,6,5 = $6
$1 - 2 / 3 = $1
$1 - 4,6,5 / 2 = $3

Race 7 - 1-1/8mi Fleur De Lis Handicap G2 - Play
A - #4 On Fire Baby (8/5) - her grade 1 win here on Oaks day was very nice, is the lone grade 1 winner in the field, definitely her race to lose and she could take them all the way on the front end
B - #5 Fiftyshadesofhay (9/5) - on paper appears second best in here and I like the post.  The one thing I love about this horse is her ability to work herself out of trouble and still run down the leaders.
C - #6 Flashy American (7/2) - the obvioius 3rd choice, but she does run well at Cd and this distance
D - #1 Ondine (6-1) - will need to work out a trip, but should lay close enough that she could grab a piece
E - #3 Frivolous (20-1) - the one horse who I think as the potential to add some bottom end exotics value

Multi-Race Horses:

A - 4
B - 5,6
Suggest Plays:

$2 - 4 / 5,6 = $4
$1 - 4 / 5,6,1,3 = $4
$1 - 4,5,6 / 4,5,6 = $6

Race 8 - 1-1/8mi Stephen Foster Handicap G1 - Action+
A - #3 Moonshine Mullin (10-1) - I think this guy could get a favorable pace setup and steal this on the lead, value esp. in the exotics
B - #4 Will Take Charge (5/2)- On his best day he towers over these, but he was very flat last out, going to try to beat him on a pace setup
C - #9 Prayer for Relief (8-1) - ran a good Pimlico Special to lose by a neck, always seems to be hanging around at the finish, good exotics horse
D - #1 Revolutionary (2-1) - I love this horse, but at 2-1 he is an underlay in this race.  It doesn't seem he'll get a favorable pace setup, but I also don't think Mike Smith will have him has far back as he was in the Pimlico Special.  He's a game horse and always puts in a great effort, I just think he is up against it here from a pace perspective, but I wouldn't leave him out of my exotics.
E - #6 Departing (9/2) - I don't think he can win without a step forward and I want to see him prove that first, but he could definitely hit the board.

Multi-Race Horses:

A - 3,4
B - 9,1
Suggest Plays:

$1 - 3,4 / 3,4,9,1,6 = $8
$1 - 9,1 / 3,4 = $4

Race 9 - 1-1/16mi Regret TURF G3 - Action
A - #7 Istanford (9/2) - I like the proven turf ability and she could definitely take them gate to wire
B - #4 A Little Bit Sassy (7/2) - Another one with prove turf ability, should get a nice stalking trip on the inside
C - #6 Aurelia's Belle (6-1) - has not run on the turf before, but has lots of class and her breeding suggest she'll take to the surface ok.  Like the work tab.  May get overlooked a little at the windows.
D - #9 Share the Sugar (6-1) - can close well, had some trouble last out but still got up for the win
E - #1 Kiss Moon (6-1) - no turf experience, but breeding suggest she'll be ok, like the work tab

Multi-Race Horses:

A- 7,4
B- 6,9
C- 1,5,3
Suggest Plays

Santa Anita - Stakes Races 7,8

Race 7 - 1mi Shoemaker Mile TURF G1 - Action+
A - #5 Summer Front (6-1) - plenty of speed in this race could set it up for this closer, figures to get a good trip
B - #1 Obviously (9/5) - needs a clear lead and could very well out run the others to the first turn, still there is plenty of speed in here that could challenge, no doubt the one to beat
C - #7 Silentio (5-1) - should be able to sit a decent trip behind the speed, good exotics horse
D - #4 Winning Prize (5/2) - speed horse, but is 2 for 2 at this distance and 5 out of 6 at Sa, can stalk but I imagine it will be a game time decision based on what a few others in here do.
E - #2 Jack Milton (3-1) - is progressing this year and is 2 out of 3 at this distance, not sure he can win, but figures to be running late and mix it up at the end in the exotics.

Multi-Race Horses:

A - 5,1
B - 7,4
Suggest Plays:

Race 8 - 1-1/8mi Vanity G1 - Play
A - #4 Let Faith Arise (2-1) - should be forwardly placed in a race without much speed. Pace, class and her Beyers make her an obvious contender.
B - #3 Grace Hall (5/2) - needs to regain some form, but her race last out wasn't bad and I have tremendous respect for the way Bill Mott places his horses.  Definite win chance with a step forward off last out.
C - #1 Iotapa (4-1) - will need to work out a trip, but has never been out of the exacta at Sa.  The stretch back out should be to her liking.
D - #5 Scherzinger (9/2) - 3 for 4 at Sa, is stretching out for a reputable barn and that is a move I have to respect
E - #6 Yahilwa (6-1) - may show some early speed, but not sure she can hold it.  Lots to prove.

Multi-Race Horses:

A - 4,3
B - 1
Suggest Plays:

$2 - 4,3 / 4,3 = $4
$1 - 4,3 / 4,3,1,5,6 = $8

Post Belmont Stakes Thoughts...

The 2014 Belmont Stakes is in the books and for a 12th time since 1978 we'll have to wait until next year to see if the Triple Crown races can be won by a single horse.  For Belmont Stakes day, they could not have put together a better undercard.  Though I was not able to get much going at the windows it was still a great and very enjoyable day of racing - and that was a win for horse racing.

Though California Chrome could not sweep the Triple Crown by winning the Belmont Stakes, his try created a lot of interest in racing.  I live in North Carolina which does not allow pari-mutuel wagering on horse racing and thus it is not discussed much in this state.  People know that I like horse racing and that my wife and I go to the Preakness every year.  Between Friday and Saturday my phone was constantly buzzing from people that know nothing about horse racing, but they wanted to know about California Chrome and what I thought about his chances of winning the Belmont.  So many times over the last few days I was able to share the excitement of this sport with people and how enjoyable it is to go to the Preakness, even if you know nothing about betting horses.  Lots of people said, "I'd love to go to a race one day!"  My standard reply is, "Go to the Preakness!  It is the easiest of the Triple Crown races to attend."  I'll say it again, what a great day and a win for horse racing, especially with people who watch the Kentucky Derby, but only tune back in if a Triple Crown is on the line.

California Chrome - There is much debate about the ride Espinoza gave California Chrome.  In horse racing I look for two things from the jockey - put the horse in contention and give him a clear look at the finish line turning for home.  Though he had to come 4 wide on the 2nd turn, California Chrome was in contention turning for home with no traffic issues.  For a few seconds it looked like he was going to draw even with the leaders, before he faded some the last 1/16 of a mile.  On the 2nd turn he just didn't seem to be moving the same as in the past two races and I told my family that I didn't think he was going to be able to win.  But, he dug in and tried to make a race of it, only getting beat 1-3/4 lengths.  It was a good effort and once he is rested he should make the second half of the year interesting, especially during the Breeders' Cup.  Also, I'm not sure the outcome would have been much different if he had gone to the lead, in fact, he may have finished worse.  If he had been on the lead, Commissioner may have pressed him the entire way which may have left him tired for the stretch run.  Despite a lot of the trash being typed on forums and blogs, California Chrome is a good horse horse and as long as he stays healthy we'll see him in the winners circle a lot more.  Since the start of 2014 he won 5 races in a row before running 4th in the Belmont Stakes.  Three of those wins were Grade 1's and one was a Grade 2 - that record says plenty by itself.

Tonalist - For the way I handicap, he was a hard horse for me to envision beating California Chrome or a few others in the field.  But, he did something that I respect when I doubt their ability, he won.  Hats off to the horse, connections and a great ride by Joel Rosario.  He sat a perfect trip, repelled a challenge by California Chrome and got his head down on the wire to beat Commissioner.  Though Peter Pan runners have won the Belmont Stakes at just a 13% clip over the last 21 years, the pendulum definitely swung the other way this time with both the exacta spots being filled by Peter Pan runners.  Looking forward to seeing this horse run again later in the summer.

Commissioner - I'm not sure if the move to go to the lead was planned, but it was brilliant.  From his pedigree we all knew this horse had the potential to run all day, the question was whether he would be fast enough in the stretch to win.  By going to the lead, he put himself in a great position to take advantage of his grinding running style.  Beaten just a head on the wire by Tonalist, he almost pulled off a major front running upset!

In this years Belmont, 5 horses finished within 2 lengths of the winner.  It looked more like a turf race finish than a dirt race.  With that close of a finish I believe if they ran this race 10 times, we could have 5-6 different outcomes in the win category.  With that said, I'm looking forward to the summertime and fall races.  I hope we see a few match-ups from some of these Belmont contenders in future races.  Especially, between Tonalist and California Chrome - I think that would be highly entertaining!

Race 11 - 1-1/2mi Belmont Stakes G1 - Play
A - #2 California Chrome (3/5) - Will need another clean break.  Has been training well and just like in the Ky Derby and Preakness, he simply appears to be the best horse in the race on paper.  Since 1919, horses that have won both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness have completed the Triple Crown by winning the Belmont 37% percent of the time.  Roughly the same as post time favorites win everyday.  We are due a Triple Crown winner and California Chrome has the right running style as 17 of the last 20 winners have run either on the lead or within 5 lengths of the lead.  I definitely would not leave him off my tickets.  Bring it home Chrome!

B - #5 Ride On Curlin (12-1) - To me this is the only horse that has put in a serious bid to test California Chrome which came in the Preakness.  He closed extremely well in the Preakness and made up some good ground in the stretch, still hit was hard to tell if he could have actually run by California Chrome if given the chance.  He can run much closer to the pace than he did in the Preakness, which would bode well for him in the Belmont.  He's worked extremely well and is one of the contenders for a Triple Crown spoiler.

C - #9 Wicked Strong (6-1) - Finished strong in the Wood Memorial and had a good finish in the Ky Derby considering the trip.  I'm not sure he can beat California Chrome, but give the improvement in the Wood Memorial and trip in the Ky Derby I'd hate for him to beat me.  I'll use him on my tickets for sure.

D - #10 General a Rod (20-1) - Should have had a much better finish in the Preakness, but was stopped badly when Ria Antonia backed up on the 2nd turn.  His trip in the Ky Derby wasn't much better.  He has the right running style and has proven he is game.  His workouts have been good and I think Rosie will give him a good ride.  Looking for a nice effort here.

E - #11 Tonalist (8-1) - A lot of people are really high on this horse and he may very well prove his merit here.  Still, Peter Pan horses have finished in the Belmont Stakes exacta just 1 time in the last 20 years.  Horse that race on a loose lead on a wet track (as he did in the Peter Pan) rarely repeat their speed figure.  He's lightly raced and his furthest race has been at 1-1/8 miles.  The question I have been asking myself, "Is this the horse I want to use to beat California Chrome?"  Especially, given some of the other battle tested horses in this field.  I'm more inclined to look to boost my exotic bets by trying to get him off the board.  Still, with the Peter Pan effort and lack of speed in here, I'll keep him on my exotic tickets.  I imagine they'll try to put him on the lead and see how far he can go.

Longshots/Value Adds-
#8 Commissioner (20-1) - has a good Belmont pedigree that may land him in the exotics
#4 Commanding Curve (15-1) - may plod his way into the exotics
